1

Sing a song to the Maruts, wiser than you, to bring Varuṇa forth— This Varuṇa who guards men’s thoughts as herds of cattle.

2

Praise him with song and hymns, as your fathers did, and with Nabhāka’s praises— Him at the rivers’ source, surrounded by his Seven Sisters.

3

He encompasses the nights, establishes mornings with magic art over all. His dear ones, following his law, prospered the Three Dawns for him.

4

Visible over all the earth, he establishes the sky’s quarters: He measured out the eastern place, the fold of Varuṇa—like a strong herdsman is the God.

5

He who sustains life’s worlds, who knows the morning beams’ hidden names, Cherishes much wisdom, Sage, as heaven shapes each form.

6

In him all wisdom centers, as the nave is set within the wheel. Haste to honor Trita, as kine gather to yoked steeds—so swift.

7

Wraps these regions as a robe; contemplates the Gods’ tribes and mortal deeds. Before Varuṇa’s home, all Gods follow his decree.

8

He’s an Ocean far removed, yet heaven’s worship reaches him through the sky. With his bright foot, he overthrew magic, ascending to heaven.

9

Ruler, whose far-sighted rays fill all three earths, spread heaven’s three realms. Firm is Varuṇa’s seat; he rules the Seven as King.

10

Who, after his decree, spreads darkness in light— Who measured out the ancient seat, pillaring worlds apart, heaven supported by the Unborn. Let all the others die away.
