Wise indeed are the beings through his might who kept ever spacious heaven and earth apart; He urged the lofty sky to move, the ancient star, and spread the earth before him.
With my own heart I ponder on the query how Varuṇa and I can be united. What gift of mine will he accept without fear? When may I calmly see and find him kind?
To know this is my sin I seek advice; I ask the wise, O Varuṇa, and inquire. Even the sages gave me the same answer, "Varuṇa is angry with you surely."
What, Varuṇa, was my greatest offense that you would slay the friend who sings your praises? Tell me, Unconquered Lord, and I will quickly approach you with my homage.
Free us from sins committed by our ancestors, from those wherein we ourselves have offended. O King, loosen us, like a thief who feeds the cattle, as from a cord a calf, free Vasiṣṭha.
Our will was not betrayed, but seduction, thoughtlessness, Varuṇa's wine, dice, or anger. The old leads the younger astray, even sleep cannot remove all evil-doing.
Serve the Bountiful gently, free from sin, the God inclined to anger. This gentle Lord grants wisdom to the simple; the wiser God leads the wise to wealth.
O Lord, O Varuṇa, may this praise come close to you and dwell within your spirit. May it be well with us in rest and labor. Preserve us evermore, ye Gods, with blessings.
