1

Like a warrior mounting his chariot for battle, we bring you strength, Indra—please attend to us— Well-spoken and wise, you seek great joy among the heroes.

2

You are our protector, our ally, a close friend to those who love you deeply, Active and just, you defend the faithful, those who come to you with sincere devotion.

3

May Indra, invoked with solemn rites, be the guardian of the young, the friend of all, One who aids the singer, the worker, the worshipper, the one who offers sacrifice.

4

With praise and song, I will honor that Indra in whom men once thrived and became powerful. May he, invoked, grant the wish of the worshipper, of the living mortal.

5

He, Indra praised by the Aṅgirases, strengthened their prayers and made their journeys prosperous. Stealing the dawn with the sun, he, praised, overcame Aśna’s ancient might.

6

He, indeed, the glorious Indra, the Wonder-Worker, raised him up for man. Self-reliant and mighty, he brought down the wicked Dāsa’s head.

7

Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, destroyer of fortresses, scattered the Dāsa hosts dwelling in darkness. For men, he created earth and water, and ever helps the prayer of the worshipper.

8

The Gods have always yielded to him in might, to Indra in the tumult of battle. When they laid the bolt in his arms, he slew the Dasyus and cast down their iron forts.

9

May that wealth-bringing Cow of yours, O Indra, give back a favor to those who praise you. Give to your praisers; may fortune never fail us. Let our voices ring out, with heroes, in assembly.
