1

LET US sing these hymns with skill, so that future ages may hear of these divine generations.

2

Brahmaṇaspati created these with his hammer and forge, like a blacksmith, In an earlier time of gods, existence came from non-existence.

3

In the first age of the gods, existence came from non-existence. From there, the regions were born. They sprang from the productive power.

4

Earth sprang from the productive power, and the regions from the earth. Dakṣa was born from Aditi, and Aditi was Dakṣa's daughter.

5

For Aditi, O Dakṣa, you who are her daughter, she was born. After her, the blessed gods were born, sharing immortal life.

6

When you, O gods, stood close together in that deep, close-clasping space, As if you were dancers, from your feet rose a thick cloud of dust.

7

When, O gods, like Yatis, you caused all existing things to grow, You brought Sūrya forward, who lay hidden in the sea.

8

Eight sons of Aditi were born from her body, and she took Martanda with her. With seven she met the gods and cast Martanda far away.

9

So with her seven sons, Aditi went forth to meet the earlier age. She brought Martanda back there to live and die again.
