The Dakṣiṇā’s broad chariot has been harnessed: this chariot the Immortals have ascended. Fond of bringing light to homes of men, the noble and active Goddess has emerged from darkness.
Before all living beings, she awakens; the lofty one who wins and gathers treasure. Revived and ever young, she gazes high. Dawn comes first to our morning worship.
If you, Dawn, noble-born Goddess, deal fortune to all mortals today, May Savitar, Friend of the homestead, declare before the Sun that we are sinless.
Each day, showing her usual form, she spreads the light, visiting each dwelling. Eager for conquest, with bright sheen, she comes. Her portion is the best of goodly treasures.
Sister of Varuṇa, sister of Bhaga, sing forth, O joyful Morning. Weak is the strength of him who works evil; may we subdue him with our chariot the reward.
Let our glad hymns and holy thoughts rise upward, for the flames brightly burning have ascended. The far-refulgent Mornings make apparent the lovely treasures that darkness once covered.
One departs and the other comes; unlike in hue, days march on successively. One hides the gloom of the surrounding parents. Dawn on her shining chariot is resplendent.
Same in form today, same tomorrow, they still keep Varuṇa’s eternal statute. Blameless, they traverse thirty regions, and dart across the spirit in a moment.
She who knows the first day’s nature is born radiant white from out the darkness. The Maiden does not break the law of Order, day by day coming to the place appointed.
Like a maiden in pride of beauty, you go to the God who longs to win you, And smiling youthful, as you shine brightly, before him you discover your bosom.
Fair as a bride adorned by her mother, you show forth your form that all may see it. Blessed are you, O Dawn. Shine more widely. No other Dawns have reached what you attain.
Rich in kine, horses, and all goodly treasures, in constant operation with the sunbeams, The Dawns depart and come again, assuming their wonted forms that promise happy fortune.
