Surya, you rise to meet the Hero renowned for his wealth, Who strikes with lightning and benefits humankind.
He who with both his mighty arms breaks down ninety-nine fortresses, Slays Vṛtra and crushes Ahi to dust.
This Indra is our dear friend. He showers riches in horses, cattle, and grain.
Whatever, Vṛtra-slayer! You, Surya, have risen today, All power is yours, Indra, today.
When, Mighty One, Lord of the brave, you think this way, I will not die, That thought is true indeed.
You, Indra, go to every Soma libation offered to you, Far and near, wherever it is.
We make this Indra very strong to strike the mighty Vṛtra dead: A valiant hero he shall be.
You, Indra, are set to give, most mighty, over the joyful draught. Bright, meet for Soma, famed in song.
By song, the powerful bolt that none can ward off is prepared, High and unyielding, he grows.
Indra, Song-lover, praised, make fair ways for us, Whenever, Maghavan, you wish.
You, Indra, whose commands and wishes none disregard, Neither bold man nor deity.
And both these Goddesses, Earth, Heaven, Lord of the beautiful helm! Revere your might that no one can withstand.
In the black cows and the red ones, and in the spotted cows, This white milk you deposit.
When all the Gods shrink from the Dragon’s fierce might, Fear falls on them, monster of terror.
Then he was my protector, then, Invincible, whose foe is none, The Vṛtra-slayer showed his might.
Him, your best Vṛtra-slayer, him, the famous champion of mankind, I urge to great generosity,
To come, Much-lauded! Many-named with this same longing for milk, Whenever the Soma juice is shed.
Much-honored by libations, may the Vṛtra-slayer wake for us: May Śakra listen to our prayers.
O Hero, with that aid you delight us, with what help bring Riches to those who worship you? 20.
