1

THESE the most constant singers invoke you, O Hero, who are to be invoked; Hymns call anew the chariot-borne, Eternal: by eloquence men gain abundant wealth.

2

I praise that Indra, known to all men, honored with songs, extolled with hymns at sacrifices, Whose majesty, rich in wondrous arts, surpasses the greatness of earth and heaven.

3

He has made paths, aided by the Sun, through the darkness that was pathless before. Mortals who wish to worship do not dishonor, O Mighty One, your eternal law.

4

And he who did these things, where is that Indra? Among what tribes? What people does he visit? What sacrifice satisfies your mind, and what wish do you have? What priest among them all? O Indra,

5

Yea, here were those born long ago who served you, your ancient friends, the active workers. Think now of these, Invoked of many! Midst and recent, and the youngest.

6

Inquiring about him, your later servants, Indra, have gained your former traditions. Hero, to whom the prayer is brought, we praise you as great for that which we know you to be mighty.

7

The demon's strength gathers against you; great as that strength grows, go forth to meet it. With your ancient friend and companion, the thunderbolt, brave Champion! Drive it back.

8

Hear, too, the prayer of this present singer, O Indra, Hero, cherishing the one who sings. You were always our fathers' friend before, still swift to hear their supplications.

9

Bring help to us today for our protection, Varuṇa, Mitra, Indra, and the Maruts, Pūṣan and Viṣṇu, Agni and Purandhi, Savitar also, and the Plants and Mountains.

10

The singers here exalt you with hymns and praises, Very Mighty and Most Holy. Hear, when invoked, the invoker's invocation. Beside you there is none like you, Immortal!

11

Now quickly come to my words, you who know, O Son of Strength, with all who claim our worship, Who visit sacred rites, whose tongue is Agni, Gods who made Manu stronger than the Dasyu.

12

Lead us on good and evil paths, known to all as Path-preparers. Give us
