1

You have been appointed by the gods, Agni, as the priest of all sacrifices, For mankind’s race.

2

With your joyful tongues, sacrifice nobly in this rite, Bring the gods and worship them.

3

You know well, O God, the paths and ways straight on, Agni, the wisest in sacrifice.

4

Old Bharata, with mighty men, implored for bliss, And worshipped you, the worshipful.

5

You give abundant boons to Divodāsa, pouring forth, To Bharadvāja, offering gifts.

6

You, Immortal Messenger, bring hither the celestial folk; Listen to the singer’s eulogy.

7

Mortals with pious thought implore you, Agni, God, at holy rites, To come to the feast of gods.

8

I glorify your aspect and the might of you, the bountiful one. All those who love shall joy in you,

9

Invoked by Manus, you, Agni, are near, the wisest priest: Pay worship to the tribes of heaven.

10

Come, Agni, lauded, to the feast; come to the offering of the gifts. As priest, sit on the grass.

11

So, Aṅgiras, we make you strong with fuel and holy oil, Blaze high, you youngest of the gods.

12

For us, you win heroic strength, exceeding great, Far-spreading and of high renown.

13

Atharvan brought you forth, from the lotus-flower, The head of Visva, of the priest.

14

The Vṛtra slayer, breaker down of castles, Atharvan’s son, Dadhyac, the Rishi, lighted up.

15

The hero Pathya kindled you, the Dasyu’s most destructive foe, Winner of spoil in every fight.

16

Come, here, oh Agni, I will sing other songs to you, And with these drops you shall grow strong.

17

Wherever your mind applies itself, preeminent strength you have: There you will gain a dwelling-place.

18

Not for a moment only does your bounty last, good to many a one! Our service therefore you gain.

19

Agni, the Bhārata, sought, the Vṛtra slayer, marked of all, Yea, Divodā
