1

Great art thou, Indra; yea, the earth rejoices with gladness, and heaven confesses to thee thy high dominion. Thou in thy vigor having slain Vṛtra freed the rivers held captive by the Dragon.

2

Heaven trembled at the birth of thy radiance; Earth trembled at the dread of thy displeasure. The steadfast mountains shook with agitation; the waters flowed, and deserts were flooded.

3

Throwing thy bolt with might, he cleaved the mountain; with strength put forth, he showed his vigor. He slew Vṛtra with his bolt, exulting, and, their lord slain, the waters flowed swiftly.

4

Thy Father Dyaus esteemed himself a hero; most noble was the work of Indra's Maker, Who begot the strong bolt's Lord who roars, immovable like earth from its foundation.

He who alone overthrows the world of creatures, Indra, King of peoples, invoked by many, Verily all rejoice in him, extolling the boons that Maghavan the God sends them.

6

All Soma juices are his forever; most delightful draughts are ever his, the Mighty, Thou ever were the Treasure-Lord of treasures: Indra, thou dost let all folk share thy bounty.

7

Moreover, when thou first was born, O Indra, thou strucked terror into all the people. Thou, Maghavan, rented with thy bolt the Dragon who lay against the floodwaters of heaven.

8

Ever-slaying, bold, and furious Indra, Lord of the bright bolt, infinite, strong, and mighty, Who slays Vṛtra and acquires booty, giver of blessings, Maghavan the bounteous:

9

Alone renowned as Maghavan in battles, he frightens away assembled armies. He brings us the booty he wins, may we, well-loved, continue in his friendship.

10

Renowned is he when conquering and when slaying: 'he who wins cattle in the combat. When Indra hardens his indignation, all that is fixed and all that moves fears him.

11

Indra has won all kine, all gold, all horses—Maghavan, he who breaks fortresses in pieces; Most manly with these men of his who help him, dealing out wealth and gathering the treasure.

12

What is the care of Indra for his
