Agni, you who make things strong, you've made me the Soma priest, to worship in the assembly. You shine for the gods, I set the press-stones. I work hard; be joyful in yourself, Agni.
We turned eastward for the ritual; may the hymn help it. With wood and offerings, they honor Agni. From heaven, the councils of the wise have learned it: for the living and the strong they seek advancement.
The prudent one, whose heart is pure, brought prosperity, allied by birth to Heaven and Earth in kinship. The gods discovered Agni in the midst of waters, through the sisters' labor, beautiful and strong.
Him, Blessed One, the Seven strong floods augmented, him white at birth and red when mighty. As mother mares run to their newborns, so at his birth the gods wondered at Agni.
Spreading with radiant limbs across the land, purifying his power with wise purifications, Clothed in light, the life of waters, he spreads his high and perfect glories.
He sought the Mighty Ones, the unconsuming, the unimpaired, not clothed and yet not naked. Then they, ancient and young, who dwell together, Seven sounding Rivers, as one germ received him.
His altars, taking every form, are scattered where sweet waters flow, at the spring of abundance; There stood the milch-kine with full udders, and both paired Mighty Mothers of the Wondrous.
Carefully cherished, Son of Strength, you shine, assuming lasting and radiant beauty. Full streams of fatness and sweet juice descend, where the Mighty One grows strong by wisdom.
From birth he knew even his father’s breast, he set his voices and streams in motion; Knew him who moves with blessed friends in secret, with the young damsels of heaven. He did not hide.
He nourished the infant of the sire and maker: alone the babe sucked many a teeming breast. Guard, for the Bright and Strong, the friendly spouses, for men and bound to him in kinship.
The Mighty One expanded in boundless space; many a glorious flood gave strength to Agni. Friend of the household, within the lap of Order lay Agni, in the Sister Rivers’ service.
As keen supporter where great waters gather, light-shedder whom the brood rejoice
