HYMN LXXXV. Sūrya's Bridal.

Truth is the foundation that supports the earth; by Surya the heavens are upheld. By Law the Ādityas stand secure, and Soma holds his place in heaven.

By Soma the Ādityas are strong, by Soma the earth is mighty. Thus Soma among all these constellations has his place.

One thinks, after they have crushed the plant, that they have drunk Soma’s juice; No one can taste the Soma that the Brahmins truly know as Soma.

Soma, protected by laws, guarded by hymns in Brhati, You stand listening to the stones, none tastes of you who dwell on earth.

When they begin to drink you, O God, you swell again. Vāyu is the Guardian God of Soma. The Moon shapes the years.

Rāibhi was her dear bridal friend, and Nārasaṃsi led her home. Lovely was Surya’s robe; she came to what Gāthā had adorned.

Thought was the pillow of her couch, sight was the unguent for her eyes; Her treasury was earth and heaven. When Surya went to her Lord.

Hymns were the crossbars of the pole, Kurira-metre decked the chariot; The bridesmen were the Aśvins, Agni was the leader of the train.

You wooed the maid, Soma, and the groomsmen were both Aśvins, When the Sun-God Savitar bestowed his willing Surya on her Lord.

Her spirit was the bridal car; its cover was heaven; Bright were both Steers that drew it when Surya approached her home.

Your Steers were steady, held in place by holy verse and Sāma-hymn; All the chariots were your two chariot wheels; your path was trembling in the sky.

Clean, as you went, were your wheels, the axle fastened there. Surya, proceeding to her Lord, mounted a spirit-fashioned chariot.

The bridal pomp of Surya, which Savitar started, moved along. In Magha days oxen are slaughtered, in Arjuris they wed the bride.

When on your three-wheeled chariot, O Aśvins, you came as woo
