HYMN LXX. Āprīs.

WELCOME, O Agni, this fuel, and this ladle filled with oil, where we offer libations. Rise up for the worship of the gods, wise Agni, on the earth’s height, while days are bright with beauty.

May he who leads the gods come here with horses of varied shapes, Narasarhsa. May he, most godlike, bring our offerings with reverence to the gods along the path of order.

Men with offerings praise the constant Agni, and pray him to perform the envoy’s duty. With a rolling chariot and the finest horses, bring the gods here and sit as Hotar.

May the gods’ joy stretch across: may it be with us long and fragrant. Holy Grass, with a friendly spirit, bring the willing gods, whose chief is Indra, to our presence.

Touch the heavens or part ways to fit the earth’s measure: yearning, you doors, seize the heavenly car. Dawn and Night, the daughters of heaven, the skilled goddesses, sit with willing spirits. In your wide lap, auspicious and willing, may the gods sit with a willing spirit.

Here in this shrine, may Dawn and Night, the daughters of heaven, the skilled goddesses, be seated. In your wide lap, auspicious and willing, may the gods sit with a willing spirit.

The stone stands tall, the fire burns high: Aditi’s lap contains the friendly natures. You two chief priests who serve at this worship, may you, more skilled, win us rich possessions.

On our wide grass, three goddesses be seated: for you have we prepared and made it pleasant. May Iḷā, she whose foot drops oil, the goddess, taste, man-like, sacrifice and well-set presents.

Since you, God Tvaṣṭar, have made beauty perfect, since you were the Aṅgirases’ companion, Willing, most wealthy, Giver of possessions, grant us the gods’ assembly, you who know.

Well-known, binding with your cord, bring here, Lord of the wood, the assembly of the gods. May Heaven and Earth be gracious to my call, may the god prepare and season our offerings.

Agni, bring here Varuṇa to help us, Indra from heaven, from the middle realm of air, the Maruts. Let all holy ones be seated on the
