1

WITH YOU, AGNI, I sing this hymn; you are my only kin, O Strong One. You provide a triple-guarded shelter. Keep the destructive lightning far from us.

2

The one who seeks sustenance in the falling waters, Agni, is your birthplace. As your companion, you win all living beings. Our horses and our songs will be victorious. They move forward like a herdsman guarding his herd.

3

And you, Agni, with divine nature, spare the stones while gathering the brushwood. Then your tracks will be like deserts in the fields. May we not anger your mighty arrow.

4

Over hills and valleys, devouring as you pass, you divide like an army eager for plunder. Like a barber shaves a beard, you shave the earth as the wind blows on your flame and fans it.

5

His lines are apparent as he approaches; the course is single, but the chariots are many. Agni, as you advance over the land beneath you, make your arms resplendent and let all the Vasus sit beside you.

6

Let your strength and burning flames rise upward, your energies, Agni, as you work. Gape widely, bend yourself, growing stronger. Let all the Vasus be here today beside you.

7

This is the waters' reservoir, the great dwelling of gathered streams. Take another path and walk as you please.

8

Let the flowers of Durva grow on your path as you come and go. Let there be lakes with lotus blooms. These are the mansions of the flood.
