1

The bull gave its milk to the bull, the son of Aditi can never be fooled. According to his wisdom, Varuṇa knows everything; may he, the Holy One, sanctify the time for sacrifice.

2

The Lady of the Flood spoke: may she leave my heart untouched amid the river’s roar. May Aditi make all that we desire come true, and may our eldest brother tell us this as chief.

3

Even this blessed morning, rich in food stores, splendid with heavenly light, has shone for man, Since they, as the gods yearned for, brought forth Agni for the assembly as the priest.

4

And the swift falcon brought, from afar, this excellent drop, keen of sight, for sacrifice, Then when the Aryans chose Agni, the Wonder-worker, and the hymn rose up.

5

You are kind to him who feeds you with grass, and skilled in sacrifice, offering you holy gifts. When you, having received the sage’s nourishment with praise, after much effort, bring many more.

6

Urge your parents, as a lover, to delight them: the Lovely One desires and craves it from the heart. The priest calls out, the sacrificer shows his skill, the Asura tries his strength, and the hymn is stirred.

7

You are far-famed, mortal man, O Agni, Son of Strength, who has won your favor. Gathering power, borne on by your horses, make your days lovely in your might and splendor.

8

When, Holy Agni, the divine assembly, the sacred council among the gods, is gathered, And when you, God-like One, distribute treasures, grant us, too, our share of riches.

9

Hear us, O Agni, in your common home: harness your swift chariot of Amṛta. Bring Heaven and Earth, the Deities’ parents, here; stay with us, do not be distant from the gods.
