To fair deities travel Two unlike in form: each in succession nourishes an infant.

Tvaṣṭar’s ten daughters, vigilant and young, produced this infant borne to various directions.

Three places of his birth they honor, in mid-air, in the sky, and in the waters.

In the eastern regions of the earth, he established the seasons in their order.

Who among you knows this secret One? The infant by his own nature has brought forth his mothers.

From the waters’ bosom, wise and great, he emerges, of divine nature.

Visible and fair, he grows in native brilliance uplifted in the lap of waving waters.

When he was born, both Tvaṣṭar’s worlds were frightened; they turn to him and reverence the lion.

The Two auspicious ones, like women, tend him: like lowing cows they seek him in their manner.

He is the Lord of Might among the mighty; on the right, they anoint him with their offerings.

Like Savitar, his mightful arms stretch out; awful, he strives grasping the world’s two borders.

He forces out a brilliant garment from all, and from his mothers draws forth new attire.

He makes him a noble form of splendor, dressing him in his home with milk and waters.

The Sage adorns the depths of air with wisdom: this is the place where the gods are worshiped.

Wide through the firmament spreads forth triumphant the far-resplendent strength of you the Mighty.

Kindled by us, preserve us, Agni, with all your self-bright, undiminished succor.

In dry spots, he makes streams, courses, torrents, and inundates the earth with gleaming floods.

All ancient things within his belly he gathers, and moves among the fresh-sprouting grasses.

Fed with our fuel, purifying Agni, so blaze to us auspiciously for glory.

This prayer of ours may Varuṇa grant, and Mitra, and Aditi and Sindhu, Earth and Heaven.
